DeLand Launch

At the Journey, we love to create a place where people can experience the life-changing presence of God, connect with others, and make a difference in the community around them. That’s why we are so excited to be coming to DeLand. We want you to know that no matter your background or history, there’s a place for you, your family, and friends here at the Journey.

We are excited to be returning to where it all started, back in DeLand 70 years ago.

Back To Our Roots

Seventy years ago, two men, Lamar Fleming and Forest Troutt, were students training to be pastors at Stetson University. Stetson and the surrounding area was a drastically different place than it is today. Both Interst-4 and Interstate-95 had yet to be constructed, leaving Route 17/92 as the main thoroughfare through Central Florida.

At this time, Lamar, who lived in Orange City, had a growing desire to reach the community. With that burden in mind he saw the need for a church that would reach and impact those living in the neighborhood. Under the leadership of Grady Snowden, Pastor of First Baptist Church of DeLand, Lamar and Forest conducted a religious census of the area. Through this research, it became clear that God was guiding them to start a church in Orange City. In October of 1947, along with 40 others, Lamar and Forest launched First Baptist Church of Orange City.

This small church was started to reach people right where they were. So, seventy years later, the church that grew into the Journey will return to where it all began. In September 2018, the Journey returns to DeLand.

Here is why we are excited

  • DeLand is Growing: 40,000+ people who need to be reached. DeLand is named one of the top 12 fastest growing suburbs in Florida.

  • Stetson University: 4000+ students who would have the opportunity to reach us because we would be close by.

  • Ministry Opportunities: DeLand has a large homeless community. We desire to reach these people with our 2C Ministry. A campus in DeLand will better allow us to serve those who are hurting and in need of help and hope.

  • Poised for the Future: Our DeLand campus will poise us for the future with the potential to continue sending people into East Volusia and beyond.
